چکیده

Multi-party chat is a standard feature of popular online games and is increasingly available in collaborative learning environments, including epistemic games. However, little is known about the linguistic qualities of group conversation, especially regarding modality of communication. This paper addresses the differences between spoken and typed conversations as high school students interacted with the epistemic game Urban Science. CohMetrix analyses showed that speech was associated with more global aspects of text (narrativity, cohesion) whereas typed input was associated with more local aspects (syntactic simplicity, word concreteness). The spoken conversations were also more verbose than typed conversations. These findings suggest that the modality in group communication should be considered, particularly with respect to the breaks in discourse cohesion that are more prominent in typed group chat.

Creation of Multimodal Corpus for Modeling Turn Management in Multi-party Conversations

Spoken interactions are known for accurate timing and alignment between interlocutors: turn-taking and topic flow are managed in a manner that provides conversational fluency and smooth progress of the task. When considering applications like robot companions which interact with the user in real time, turn-taking and topic flow are also important. This paper describes creation of multi-modal co...

What do epistemic logic and cognitive science have to do with each other?

Epistemic logic is a multi-faceted theory aimed at targeting notions such as knowledge, belief, information, awareness, memory and other propositional attitudes, by means of logical and semantical tools. These concepts ought to be in the spotlight of cognitive science too, but the two have not yet seriously been explored in cooperation. In this paper, it is shown that a number of possibilities ...

Increasing the Coherence of Spoken Dialogue Summaries by Cross-Speaker Information Linking

This paper addresses the question of how to increase local coherence in summaries of multi-party conversations. Due to the interactive nature of dialogues, local regions of coherence often stretch across diierent speakers, as for instance in question-answer pairs. We present an approach to automatically detect those regions of local coherence and evaluate the resulting summaries' uency and info...

Computing Backchannel Distributions in Multi-Party Conversations

In multi-party conversations it may not always be obvious who is talking to whom. Backchannels may provide a partial answer to this question, possibly in combination with some other events, such as gaze behaviors of the interlocutors. We look at some patterns in multi-party interaction relating features of backchannel behaviours to aspects of the partipation framework.
